Case Study

What was the challenge?

Traditionally Security and Emergency Control Room Operators would monitor a collection of stand-alone sensors and alarm systems with the aim of identifying an incident and then coordinating an appropriate response.

What was the solution?

Atheniem was part of a team that provided system engineering and technical assurance to all elements of the design for the procurement of a new security and emergency Incident Management System. Atheniem ensured that the Incident Management System and its supporting infrastructure capitalised on the most advanced but proven technology to automate the monitoring, detection, and classification of potential adversaries. Dialogue was maintained with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI) throughout the design thereby ensuring security by design.

What was the outcome?

The use of technology to perform the monitoring and detection roles ensured that the focus was placed on activities which are not subject to human concentration lapse or attention to detail. The Operators have benefitted from a system that has removed standard and repetitive activity allowing them to focus on the confirmation and event management activity. The automation has ultimately improved performance through accuracy, alignment with company Standard Operating Procedures and speed of reaction.

The system has achieved the following:

  1. Maximised automation.
  2. Improved detection with greater accuracy and precision.
  3. Improved response times.
  4. Improved reliability.
  5. Process guidance.
  6. Full system integration.
